Carpenter Bees

Although these bees do not eat wood, they bore a perfect hole in decks, soffits, door frames, window frames, and even siding. These bees will cause cosmetic damage over several years if left untreated. One distinctive sign of these bees is a yellowish stain that resembles bird droppings on the siding or deck areas. Usually, you will also see sawdust and the bees hovering close to the holes.\

Carpenter Ants

These are the giant black, brown, red, and yellow ants that you find wandering around trees, lawns, sheds, firewood, garage, garbage cans, railroad ties, your kitchen, dishwasher, bathroom, or any other areas where they can find water or food. These pests tend to nest in areas that are prone or already have a moisture problem. Like the carpenter bees, they do not consume wood but rather hollow it out to create "galleries" so that they can control the moisture and humidity in this area to suit their needs better. These insects can do considerable damage and, if left alone, will usually create a nuisance later in the evenings or early in the day. Seeing the ants themselves is usually the first sign that ants may be present in your home, but other signs, such as sawdust, rotted wood, and dead ants, may also indicate an infestation.

Rodents – Rats, Mice, Squirrels, and Chipmunks

All rodents constantly gnaw; otherwise, their teeth will continue to grow; having teeth that are not cared for would affect their ability to eat and defend themselves. Unfortunately, they gnaw on wires, cables, wood trim, and other areas that can cause damage and safety issues. Besides their gnawing, their nesting and defense habits usually cause erosion problems in and around your home.

Old House Beetles, Wood Borers, Wood Boring Beetles, and Wood Boring Bees

There are many wood-boring bees and beetles. Although these pests tend not to be as large of a problem in this area, their importance and potential for structural damage can be severe if left untreated or undiscovered by an inexperienced inspector or company.

Fabric & Food Pests

This group of pests invades our food, clothes, books, and other stored possessions to eat, nest, and destroy. These include pests such as Clothes Moths, Hide Beetles, Carpet Beetles, Food pests, Silver Fish, and Crickets. A professional exterminator can easily control fabric and food pests; their misidentification and lack of discovery are the leading cause of their damage.

There are many incidental occasional invaders, and their presence is often related to moisture. However, the recommended control measures for these pests are, for the most part, minimal. Topping the list in this category are Pill Bugs, Sow Bugs, and Scuds (commonly called "Rolly Pollies"). These crustaceans all need a moist environment to live. Therefore, they find living conditions under excessive mulch, near decaying vegetation, and damp basements or crawlspaces. The key to controlling these pests is finding and removing moisture sources. Chemical measures aren't usually needed because these pests won't typically survive indoors anyway. You want to stop them before they get in.

Two other groups of incidental pests that like thick mulched or organic moist are Springtailsand Earwigs. Exclusion, habitat alteration, moisture reduction, and mechanical removal of pests are the keys to control.

Millipedes, and in particular garden millipedes, are another common invader. These pests can grow to large numbers in yards and gain access to a structure via cracks and crevices under doors and thresholds. Millipedes reach structures by accident via their normal crawling behavior, although they will trail each other; because these pests tend to have a foul odor, they should be swept or vacuumed up as soon as possible. It can be challenging to achieve chemical control of millipedes in outdoor areas simply because many treatments don't fully penetrate the mulch to reach them.

Centipedes tend to cause more alarm among homeowners. Unlike millipedes, centipedes are fast-moving, predatory creatures that can bite. While millipedes have two legs per body segment, centipedes have just one. Also, while millipedes survive off organic vegetation, centipedes feed on other insects.

Spider Species are occasional invaders, such as the "ambush spiders" (wolf spiders), which wander in under doors. Many spiders, especially ground-dwelling ones, are only incidental pests. No chemical controls are needed for these types of pests.

Crickets can also be characterized as incidental and possibly seasonal invaders. There are two main types: The field cricket is a black, stout-bodied cricket that is not known to establish indoors. Exclusion is the best remedy. Meanwhile, the house cricket is brown and can establish themselves indoors in such places as crawlspaces, basements, and damp garages.

Spotted Lanternfly

Many people have never even heard of the spotted lanternfly. However, if you are familiar with these insects, you already know they are a problem. Native to Northern China, Vietnam, and Tibet, this invasive species has since made its way to the United States and Japan. While still considered an emerging pest, spotted lanternflies are increasingly common on the east coast in states like New Jersey and Pennsylvania. While not dangerous per se, spotted lanternflies are highly destructive and can contribute to reduced yields on fruit-bearing trees and plants. They are a fascinating species in many ways and very interesting to look at, but make no mistake—spotted lanternflies are not part of our ecosystem and should be exterminated promptly whenever possible.

Fortunately, Hoffman's Exterminating proudly provides spotted lanternfly control. When we learned about this pest's ensuing threat, we quickly jumped into action, finding the ideal materials and methods to get rid of them promptly and efficiently.

How Do You Get Rid of Spotted Lanternflies?

At Hoffman's Exterminating, our goal is to assess the specific needs of your property and decide what works best situation. There are two main methods for dealing with a spotted lanternfly infestation: soil injection and spraying. We may recommend either service or a combination of the two depending on the severity of the problem. Regardless of your option, our work will always focus on safety to protect pets, children, and everyone else on your commercial or residential property.

Which type of spotted lanternfly control is right for me:?

  • Soil Injection: Soil injection is inserting insecticide into a tree or shrub that the pest in question – in this case, spotted lanternflies – has taken over. Our technicians will inject the insecticide through the affected tree/plant's roots, letting the material move up through the living parts and into the canopy, thus disincentivizing the pest to use the tree or plant as a food/shelter source.

  • Spraying: Our spraying process for spotted lanternflies is pretty simple to what we would use to deal with various pests. The one thing to note is that rather than spraying any part of a structure with insecticide, we will instead be spraying the exterior of the infected tree. For this reason, it may be less effective than injecting the soil directly. However, insecticide spraying and injection are often the best courses for getting rid of spotted lanternflies.
